You're learning how to lead, build strategy, run the numbers, and make tough calls. Thatâs what an MBA is all about, right?
But hereâs the truth no one tells you:
When everyone in the room is technically brilliant, your real edge is your personality, mindset, and how you make people feel.
Soft skills arenât fluffâtheyâre fuel.
During my daughterâs internship search, I asked her what companies were really looking for.
Her answer? One word:
âCoachable.â
She told me:
âTechnical skills are expected. What stands out is how willing you are to learn and grow.â
That one word unlocked a bigger insight Iâve seen play out over and over again.
I shared this with my partner, who knows a thing or two about organizational psychology. He reminded me of a powerful insight from research going back to the 1970s:
đ Once professionals hit a baseline of technical ability, interpersonal skills and mindset become the differentiators.
And guess what? Todayâs job market still proves that.
đ LinkedInâs Global Talent Trends report shows that coachability, collaboration, and emotional intelligence are some of the top traits employers seekâand struggle to find.
Think of your technical skills as the engine of your career.
They get you moving. Theyâre non-negotiable.
But your mindset and soft skills?
Theyâre the steering wheel.
Without them, you canât navigate. You canât lead. You canât go far.
Over the years, Iâve mentored and worked with countless studentsâand the pattern is always the same:
â
The ones who land top jobs quickly?
Theyâre not just smart. Theyâre approachable, reliable, humble, and adaptable.
â
The ones who stand out in interviews and teams?
They listen well. They ask good questions. They bring good energy into the room.
â
The ones who grow into leaders?
Theyâre the ones people trust, enjoy, and choose to work with.
Hereâs what I want you to take away:
𧩠Be Coachable
Signal that youâre open to feedback and growth. Companies love people who evolve.
đŹ Practice Emotional Intelligence
Know how to read the room, manage tension, and connect. Thatâs real leadership.
đ Lead with Confidence and Humility
Back yourselfâbut stay curious. The best leaders ask questions, not just give answers.
đ€ Build Authentic Relationships
People donât just hire rĂ©sumĂ©s. They hire people they trust and like working with.
I didnât get this when I was a student. I thought success was about being smart and âgetting it right.â
But what opened the real doors in my career?
Being dependable. Being kind. Being curious.
Those are the traits that leave a lasting impression.
Your technical skills will get you noticed.
But your mindset and personality will get you rememberedâand promoted.
So ask yourself today:
How do I make people feel in a meeting, on a call, or during a group project?
That reflection might be your most valuable asset as a future leader.
